Marino Mariano is a fisherman and self-taught musician from an Afro-Mexican community in Collantes, on the Costa Chica of Oaxaca. Despite being illiterate, he has composed more than 40 songs over his lifetime. Now in his late 60s, Marino begins recording the songs he still remembers, determined to preserve them before they are lost. Along the way, he reconnects with other local musicians — “The Authentics”— who share a similar desire to preserve their musical traditions and personal histories.

THE FILMMAKER

Juan Cristóbal Jasso Aguilar was born in Mexico City. He is a Sociologist from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana - Iztapalapa (2012). Since 2010 he has collaborated with Ñuu Kaan community radio in Oaxaca's Coast, where he worked to amplify the voices and music of Afro-Mexican and indigenous people. In 2015 he obtained a grant from "Ambulante Más Allá" as an editor and sound designer for the short/documentary "Caricia". In 2016 he obtained a PhD in Rural Sociology, and after that he started the production of his first feature: Marino & The Authentics. Currently he is a full time professor in the Afro Universidad Politécnica Intercultural in Santa María Cortijos, Oaxaca.
